Gun Crime Today in Our Society

Today gun crime is prolific. It makes daily headlines. Why? Is it because we have turned into a gun crazed country where we have to resort to fire arms for protection? Are we as a nation so influenced by the Hollywood movies that transcend across the pond, with the handsome hero saving the day and foiling the plot of the arch villain after the obligatory  7.62×39 surplus ammo  car chase and shoot out? Is the nature of music today with lyrics and images of the hood and carrying a 9mm?

Or is it that there are pockets of society that have been overlooked or lost in the system, a system that should provide basic education, housing and health care.

I think everyone of us knows an area near by where you just don’t go or wouldn’t want to. An area typically like an inner city estate, where there are densely populated concrete clad dwellings, a seasoning of vandalized, fortified shops, providing the basics and the inevitable bookmakers. Where graffiti is the only splash of color on the otherwise bleak landscape. These areas often policed not by our authorities, but by a sub culture that has evolved over generations of ignorance and mistreatment. Poor education and inadequate housing and a lack of employment and I would suggest poor upbringing has led to maladjusted morality This a picture that I am sure we are all so familiar with.

So is this a connection with our gun crime problem? Sadly yes. It seems that illegal guns are readily available in just such areas. How do they get there? And how are they sold? This is the sixty four thousand dollar question. They are usually sold for so called protection. Protection from what? We have a criminal justice system for just that. Protection from lawless enterprises such as prostitution and drug dealing. Where rival gangs exorcise their brutal control over areas they claim their own, because of profitability of the services they provide. How sad our society has come to this.

When the innocent are so often caught up in tragedy. It is legal to own guns in this country. In fact the gun industry is worth an alleged 25 million pounds per year in the United Kingdom alone. So what’s going wrong?

I myself am a shotgun and firearms owner. I have been for years. My job dictates this as I run and own a shop providing shooting accessories. I shoot for both pleasure and for pest control purposes. Did you know in this country we have the right to bare arms. If any person ( who is of right mind and has no criminal convictions ) and have a true purpose or sporting needs can apply for a shotgun license and in most cases will be granted. We have to have correct security in place in the form of a gun safe and an appropriate place of storage for any ammunition. All these guns are registered with your local police force and you are responsible for storage and safe handling. So every legal gun in the U.K. is fully traceable and the authorities know the exact whereabouts at all times.

This is not the real problem, it’s the illegal unregistered guns that pose the greatest threat. Villains are not interested in shotguns or rifles, these people want something small, concealable and that holds a large quantity of rounds. A few months ago a friend of mine told me a very disturbing account of a gun shop in his area that was broken into one Sunday night and the only thing stolen was ammunition. They ignored the cash safe that was full of the weekends takings, instead the only thing taken was ammo. This is frightening, the thought of two and a half thousand rounds of illegal unregistered ammunition being available on the black market. This fills me with fear, not only for innocent members of the general public, but for the future of my and many of the legitimate registered firearms holders future.
